Clean water begins at the source. So forests, which provide 80% of California's urban water supplies, play an important role in keeping our communities and wildlife healthy throughout the state. The forests of the Sierra Nevada and the North Coast, long renowned for their stunning beauty and diverse ecology, are critical in maintaining safe levels of water quality and quantity, and in promoting strong rural and agricultural economies statewide. However, destructive logging practices are taking an enormous toll on our state-regulated forests. Fifty years of industrial logging has already caused severe consequences for North Coast rivers and streams, and the plans of one industrial timber company to clearcut over 1 million acres of Sierra Nevada forests foreshadow further damage -- unless we take action now to protect our forests and water quality for our families, for our future.
