Protecting California wilderness has been a key mission of Sierra Club since it was founded by John Muir in 1892. Today, that mission is more urgent than ever. Over 675,000 acres of unprotected wilderness on public lands in California have been lost in the past decade due to logging, roadbuilding, abuse by off-road vehicles, and other human-caused destruction. And only one percent of California's rivers are protected from dam building and other harmful actions. Now is the time to permanently save what's left of California's wildlands and rivers!
The
California Wild Heritage Campaign, of which Sierra Club is a founding
member, is organizing people all over the state to support preservation
of millions of acres of wildlands and hundreds of miles of wild rivers.
The campaign was begun as an effort to survey and map all remaining federal
wild lands and rivers in our state. Now that has been accomplished, and
we have moved on to the goal of permanent protection for all deserving
places. Find out more...
