Coastal Budget Alert Update: URGENT
******************************************************

In LegAlert #97-7, dated May 31, we asked you to make phone
calls to support some Assembly budget proposals that would ensure
funding for coastal protection.

There was a mistake in that alert, though, that has caused some
legislators to receive mixed messages from supporters of coastal
protection.

If you haven't made your call yet, please use the following
information. If you have made your call already, please try to call
again so we can be sure that the budget conference committee gets
a clear message about what the Sierra Club wants.

In LegAlert #97-7, we urged the support of the Assembly budget's
Coastal Initiative and Watershed Initiative funding proposals. We
want to continue our support of the Coastal Initiative funding to
protect coastal waters and habitats. However, WE DO NOT
WANT TO FUND THE GOVERNOR'S WATERSHED
INITIATIVE. This initiative is the Governor's attempt to appear
that he is doing something about fisheries recovery, when in fact the
initiative does not even scratch the surface of what needs to be
done, especially in light of the recent coho listing.

Sorry about the mistake and the late notice, but please try to call
Assemblymember Ducheny (916/445-7556) and Senator Thompson
(916/445-5202) ASAP to let them know that while we do support
the Coastal Initiative, we oppose funding for the Watershed
Initiative and we will not agree to funding for anything construed as
a recovery program unless it actually is a recovery program. The
budget conference committee members have not yet been
determined, but it seems likely that Ducheny and Thompson will be
on the committee.
