Legislature Votes the Environment on Same-House Bills
************************************************************
Last week marked the halfway point for Legislative Season 1997. Friday
was the final day for bills to pass through their house of origin. The
environment is doing quite well so far this season, and we have been
pleasantly surprised by the success of pro-environment bills in both houses.
There is bipartisan support for initiatives relating to issues such as coastal
protection and air pollution reduction, and we are encouraging legislators
to take real action by funding environmental protection. All is not perfect,
however; anti-regulatory rhetoric is alive and well in Sacramento, and some
good bills have failed and some bad ones passed under the guise of
"reducing government infringement on people's lives."
The following is an update on the progress of bills that have been listed in
previous LegAlerts. A short description of each bill is included here, and
you can refer back to the original LegAlert for a more complete analysis.
